A COUNTRY smaller than the city of Delhi, with population of barely 12 million and a population density of 376 per square kilometer versus 11,312 per square kilometer in Delhi, Belgium punches much above its weight. A developed country with advanced high-income economy, Belgium is one of the six founding members of the European Union and its capital Brussels is the de facto capital of EU itself.

Having itself attained freedom from the neighbouring Netherlands in 1830, Belgium was the first counry to establish diplomatic relations with India in 1947, as soon as India gained independence from the British rule. So, as India celebrated Azadi Ka Amritmahotsav last year, it also celebrated 75 years of diplomatic ties with Belgium.

Trade, investment

India and Belgium enjoy a thriving economic partnership, with Belgium ranking as one of India’s key trade partners within the EU. In 2018 alone, the total trade between the two countries amounted to €12.8 billion. Diamonds, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, foodstuff, and machinery dominate the trade landscape.

The partnership extends beyond trade, as Belgian companies have made significant investments in India, with around 170 of them operating in the country. Simultaneously, India has also made its mark in Belgium, with approximately 95 Indian companies establishing a presence, either through offices or manufacturing plants in the tiny but powerful nation.

The India-Belgium Luxembourg Economic Union (BLEU) serves as a powerful vehicle for deepening trade and economic ties. India is among the 10 most important partners of the Port of Antwerp.

Cultural exchanges

Apart from the strong economic bond, cultural connections have also played a pivotal role in shaping the relationship between India and Belgium. Indian influences can be seen throughout Belgium’s history, leaving an indelible mark on the artistic landscape. Belgian Art Nouveau draws inspiration from Indian textiles, Ottoman and Mughal architecture, and the concept of total art. This artistic fusion continues to captivate audiences and foster deeper cultural exchanges between the two nations.

Indian diaspora

Belgium hosts a vibrant Indian diaspora, with an estimated 25,000 members residing within its borders. Recognising their significance, India and Belgium signed a bilateral agreement on social security in 2006, which came into force in 2009. This landmark agreement not only simplifies the lives of the Indian diaspora but also serves as a model for similar agreements between India and other nations.

High-skilled professionals from India form the single largest nonEuropean diaspora in Belgium and they are productively contributing to Belgium’s economic development.
