NEW DELHI: Better planning and advanced policy measures have ensured adequate power capacity availability without straining the supply chain as the country battles an unprecedented heat wave, said officials. Electricity demand surged 10.5% last month, with peak power demand hitting 224 GW on April 30, higher than last year’s 216 GW.

“The major load is likely coming from air conditioners contributing to peak power demand, especially in the evening,” said a Government official, who did not wish to be identified.

The heatwavespell in eastern and southern peninsular India is expected to continue till May 6, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
