Mahadevan, Zakir win Best Global Music Album honour at 2024 Grammys

NEW DELHI: India celebrated a moment of pride as the fusion band Shakti, comprising singer Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain won the Best Global Music Album award at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on February 4.

The Indian duo’s latest release, This Moment won them the coveted prize the announcement of which was shared on X. The official post from the Grammys exclaimed, “ Congrats Best Global Music Album winner –This Moment ‘ Shakti. #GRAMMYs.” In a competitive category, Shakti triumphed over fellow artists such as Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy, and Davido.

This Moment comprises eight songs, showcasing the talents of John McLaughlin (guitar, guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (vocalist), V Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist). The band’s lineup also includes guitarist John McLaughlin, percussionist V Selvaganesh, and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan. Another Grammy-winning achievement in the category of Best Global Music Performance was secured by Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer, and Rakesh Chaurasia for their track ‘Pashto.’
