India’s moment in UK

The epochal feat of Rishi Sunak, an Indian-origin practising Hindu, becoming the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, is the obvious Cover Story of the week. And we have gone beyond the front page and created a special package that spans over the Centrespread and two more pages, including the ‘Rising India’ on the back. Besides taking care of the key news developments, the Sunak package comprises a series of insightful reports, explanatory graphics and select pictures. Overall, a blockbuster of an issue that will keep the readers engrossed.

Sunak’s appointment as PM, says our Cover Story, has an extraordinary symbolic significance for race relations in Britain and all over Europe and the Americas, for the struggle against colonialism, and for the empowerment of non-White immigrants.

Sunak’s appointment has an extraordinary symbolic significance for race relations in Britain and all over Europe and Americas

Sunak as UK Prime Minister signifies “an audacity of hope” for millions of people from former British colonies, for the diaspora of Indians who have settled all over the globe, it says. A soft piece on the Rishi-Akshata romance story also finds a prominent slot on the front page. Our report goes back to Sunak’s MBA days at Stanford where he first met his wife Akshata, daughter of Infosys’s former Chairman and Co-Founder NR Narayana Murthy. The story also informs us of the three-day wedding festivities at Bengaluru which were attended by the global glitterati. Apart from that, we have perceptive pieces on the major challenges confronting Sunak – both on the home and global front; the tightrope walk which he has to perform; a report on the Indian diaspora and finally, PM Modi’s conversation with his new counterpart in the UK. The G20 Podium is back this week with two exclusive reports. The first deals with the 2018 presidency of Argentina and explains why it can be termed as a huge success. Looked through the nervewracking events that took place during that year, the presidency was undoubtedly a success, stresses our report, while listing its various achievements.

It was the first time that women empowerment found place in the summit declaration, besides pledging of resources for IMF to help members survive financial turmoil. Most surprisingly, the summit was able to find common grounds on climate change, says our report. Based on the FM’s recent statement in Washington, the second report says that India will try to develop standard operating procedures for crypto-currency as part of its agenda during the G-20 presidency, which begins in December.

The benefits of crypto can outweigh its negative aspects if it can be brought under a regulatory framework, states our report. Among the other major news developments, we have tried to put in perspective news reports about chances of a new political alignment in Maharashtra; the likely fallout of Jayalalithaa aide Sasikala’s indictment by a probe panel; deeper implications of a public spat between Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and India’s Solicitor General Tushar Mehta; and the politics being played over India-Pakistan cricket matches. Some other notable developments have also been taken care of in our news-focused pages.
