NEW DELHI: In an insightful perspective on the evolving dynamics of international relations, the Egyptian Ambassador to India earlier this year emphasised the potential for the India-Egypt partnership to transcend historical precedents.
He pointed out that the disciplined positions held by both countries in the face of “contemporary double polarisation” create an opportunity to “surpass the era of Nasser and Nehru”, ushering in a new chapter exemplified by the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and President Sisi.
Unique moment
Ambassador Wael Mohamed Awad Hamed made these remarks during a panel discussion titled ‘India-Egypt Ties in Changing Global Order’ at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA). He noted that while the current context differs from the Non-Aligned Movement era of the 1950s and 1960s, it presents unique opportunities amid the challenges posed by global double polarisation.
Highlighting the immense potential of the India-Egypt partnership, the Ambassador stressed the commonalities shared by both nations within the Global South. He emphasised the strong foundation of multilateral cooperation and a shared understanding of regional and global issues that underpin their relationship.
Modi-Sisi connect
The Ambassador highlighted the personal connection and common agenda shared between Prime Minister Modi and President Sisi, strengthening the bond between the two nations. In the current global landscape marked by increasing polarisation between the East and the West, as well as the North and the South, the Ambassador emphasised the importance of nurturing existing bonds while forging new connections. He underscored Egypt’s crucial role in ensuring peace and stability within the Arab and African regions.
