AHMEDABAD: Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the National Convention of Modi Samaj here on May 21.
Addressing the convention, Shah said efforts were being made to unite the dispersed community, and it was a good sign for both the community and the nation. He said this community had progressed ahead due to its continuous efforts.
Crediting Prime Minister Modi with the strides made by the community, Shah said PM Modi had visited every village in Gujarat and inspired the youth and by forming an organisation he had provided an unparalleled structure for bringing change in Gujarat.
The Home Minister said the previous governments had always harassed and humiliated the OBC community and ignored them while Prime Minister Modi took many initiatives for giving respect to the OBC community in last nine years.
Modi Samaj is a body comprising people who carry the Modi surname. Modis are part of the Modh Ghanchi, or Teli Ghanchi community, which was considered to be a sub-caste of the Vaishyas, an upper caste community that belongs to the General category.
In Gujarat, the Ghanchi community was not seen as a backward caste until the state’s Social Welfare Department passed a notification on July 25, 1994, which included 36 castes as other backward castes (OBCs), including Modh Ghanchi
