Toby UsnikIn today’s interconnected and globalized world, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have become increasingly important topics of discussion. But what exactly is DEI, and why does it matter?

DEI is a broad term that encompasses the concept of creating a workplace, school, or community where everyone feels welcome, valued, and respected. It is about ensuring that everyone can succeed, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or any other personal characteristic.

DEI is important for several reasons. First, it is simply the right thing to do. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and to have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Second, DEI is good for business. A diverse workforce can lead to increased creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. It can also help to attract and retain top talent.

Third, DEI is good for society. When everyone feels included and valued, it can lead to increased social cohesion and a stronger community.

There are several factors that have contributed to the rise of DEI as a prominent topic. One factor is the increasing awareness of the challenges faced by marginalized groups. In recent years, there has been a growing movement to challenge discrimination and injustice, and to promote the rights of all people.

Another factor is the changing demographics of the United States. The country is becoming increasingly diverse, and businesses and organizations are recognizing the need to adapt to this changing landscape.

Finally, the rise of social media has also played a role in making DEI a more prominent topic. Social media has made it easier for people to share their stories and experiences, and to connect with others who share their concerns.

There are several things we can do to promote DEI in our workplaces, schools, and communities. Here are a few examples:

  • Educate ourselves about DEI. The more we know about DEI, the better equipped we will be to promote it.
  • Be an advocate for DEI. Speak up against injustice and discrimination.
  • Create inclusive environments. Make sure that everyone feels welcome and included in your spaces.
  • Celebrate diversity. Recognize and appreciate the different cultures and perspectives that make our world a richer place.

DEI is an ongoing journey. There will be challenges along the way, but we are committed to making progress.
Together, we can create a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive world for everyone.

Romo Edelman’s passion for social justice stems from her own experiences as a Latina immigrant in the United States. She witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by marginalized communities and the power of collective action to bring about positive change. Inspired by her upbringing and fueled by a deep sense of empathy, she embarked on a mission to make the world a more inclusive and equitable place.

She has been in the driving seat of some of the most successful global campaigns of the last decade including the launch of the SDGs, Product (RED), the creation of the SDG Lions, the rebranding of the UN Refugee Agency, and the World Economic Forum. She is a visionary leader and marketer who has worked for 25 years with the most recognized institutions including the United Nations, UNICEF, the Global Fund, and the World Economic Forum.

In 2017, Romo Edelman founded WAAH, a platform that brings together business leaders, policymakers, NGOs, and individuals to address the root causes of discrimination and promote inclusive practices. The organization’s mission is simple yet profound: to remind the world that, regardless of our differences, we all share the common bond of humanity.

WAAH has spearheaded several impactful initiatives, including the “We Are All Human” Global Campaign, which aims to challenge stereotypes and promote understanding between diverse groups. The campaign has garnered widespread support and participation from individuals and organizations around the world.

Romo Edelman’s leadership and unwavering commitment to social justice have garnered her international recognition. She has been named one of Forbes’ “Most Powerful Latinas” and one of the “100 Most Influential Latinos” by Hispanic Business. Beyond her work with WAAH, Romo Edelman is an active advocate for gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigrant rights. She serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations and frequently speaks at conferences and events around the world.

Romo Edelman’s message is clear: in a world that often emphasizes our differences, we must never forget our shared humanity. Through her work with WAAH and her unwavering commitment to social justice, she is inspiring others to join her in creating a world where everyone can thrive.

As with all guests on The Caring Economy, Claudia Romo Edelman and We Are All Human show us how leaders with purpose-driven lives and careers are shaping our contemporary lives for the better. We must all keep the faith.
