NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned the loss of civilian lives in IsraelHamas conflict and emphasised the need for dialogue and diplomacy. He reiterated his call for respecting international humanitarian law in the ongoing conflict in West Asia as also on the war in Ukraine.

Addressing the India-hosted virtual Voice of Global South Summit recently,he reminded world leaders, “India has condemned the heinous terrorist attack in Israel on October 7. Along with restraint, we have also emphasised on dialogue and diplomacy. We strongly condemn the deaths of civilians in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.” PM Modi apprised the leaders about the achievements of India’s G20 presidency that addressed challenges facing such developing nations.

Global prosperity

“After talking to President Mahmoud Abbas, we have also sent humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine. It is time that the countries of the Global South speak with one voice for the greater global good,” the PM added.

In any conflict, humanity suffers – with death, destruction and longterm economic consequences. A true world leader does not take sides based on gains, but over morality and fact.

“Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas is necessary for global prosperity. But we are all seeing that new challenges are emerging from events in the West Asia region,” he observed in his November 17 address.

Humanitarian aid

India has sent humanitarian aid to Palestine which includes essential life-saving medicines, surgical items, tents, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, sanitary utilities, water purification tablets, among other necessary items.

The brunt is largely borne by the Global South – comprising developing and under-developed nations – which has been watching India’s stand on the recent conflict. Prime Minister Modi’s statement is thus considered significant at this juncture.
