THE Kerala government has reaffirmed its dedication to align beach tourism projects with current demands, aiming to harness the considerable potential of this specialised sector while elevating hospitality standards. Inaugurating the refurbished Samudra Kovalam, the beachside resort of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC), Tourism Minister PA Mohamed Riyas emphasised the importance of embracing innovative ideas in the tourism sector on January 31.
Situated in Thiruvananthapuram, Kovalam encompasses three exquisitely beautiful palm-fringed coves. The captivating lighthouse, the gently swaying palms, the rugged cliffs, and the pristine beaches are among the distinctive features that make Kovalam an integral part of the Kerala experience.
The minister highlighted that the revamped sea-front resort will enhance Kerala’s reputation as a rapidly emerging hub for destination weddings and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism. He noted that as destination weddings gain global popularity, the state offers picturesque locations to promote this niche area, with the government striving to create optimal facilities for this segment.
Nestled on a vast coconut tree-lined site overlooking the Arabian Sea, Samudra Kovalam has long been the epitome of Kerala’s highly successful beach tourism. The latest round of renovation, funded by the state government at Rs 12.68 crore, has added 40 rooms, transforming the property and its surroundings into an ideal setting for upscale weddings and MICE tourism, as stated in the release.
In his presidential address, KTDC Chairman PK Sasi revealed that in the third phase of renovation, 40 rooms were refurbished in line with modern aesthetic concepts. Sasi further announced that 24 additional rooms at Samudra Kovalam, considered the exemplary model for beach tourism, will undergo renovation in the upcoming phase.
