Beyond their significant contributions to the US economy and professional sectors, IndianAmericans are renowned for their tradition of philanthropic giving. Driven by deeply rooted cultural values and a desire to give back, a remarkable number of successful Indian-Americans actively engage in making a difference in the lives of others both in the US and in India.

From healthcare and education to poverty alleviation and community development, Indian-American philanthropists support a spectrum of causes. Often, they draw inspiration from their own experiences as immigrants or their familial connections to India. Whether through generous financial contributions, hands-on involvement, or establishing influential foundations, their impact resonates on both sides of the globe.

The leading lights

Among the leading lights in Indian-American philanthropy is Manoj Bhargava, founder of 5-Hour Energy. Renowned for his downto-earth demeanour, Bhargava has pledged 99 per cent of his vast wealth to charitable initiatives. His ‘Billions in Change’ movement focuses on innovative solutions to fundamental problems affecting humanity, ranging from clean energy technologies to improved healthcare in rural India.

Venture capitalist and entrepreneur Romesh Wadhwani has dedicated his fortune to empowering disadvantaged communities in India. The Wadhwani Foundation spearheads initiatives around economic acceleration, driving job creation and skill development programmes for youth in India. Through the Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence, they are harnessing AI solutions to address societal challenges within India.

Gururaj ‘Desh’ Deshpande, the co-founder of Sycamore Networks, focuses strongly on fostering entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems. Along with his wife Jaishree, he has supported institutions like MIT and IITs and built the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation.

The John and Vinod Gupta Foundation seeks to break the cycle of poverty through a focus on education and livelihoods. Their transformative work with organisations operating in the remotest regions of India is empowering girls and giving young people a chance for a better life.

Education key focus

There are many motivators driving IndianAmerican philanthropy. Often a shared belief system centered on ‘seva’ – a concept of selfless service – is prevalent. A sense of gratitude for the opportunities they have had fosters a desire to give back. For some, it’s a personal connection to challenges they might have witnessed or experienced in India.

Education remains a primary focus for many Indian-American philanthropists. Supporting institutions in both the US and India reflects their strong emphasis on the transformative power of education.

Healthcare is another priority area, with initiatives ranging from funding rural clinics to establishing state-of-the-art hospitals in India. Moreover, there’s a growing focus on addressing poverty, empowering women, promoting rural development, and supporting arts and culture both within the US and in India.

Partnering India

Alongside individual philanthropists, several organisations amplify the impact of IndianAmerican generosity.

INDIASPORA: This unique platform unites the Indian diaspora globally and champions causes in India. It facilitate initiatives around youth leadership, women’s empowerment, and disaster relief.

AMERICAN INDIA FOUNDATION: One of the largest US-based organisations focusing on development in India, AIF’s work covers areas like education, public health, and livelihoods. Through partnerships and collaborations, AIF scales its impact.

DASRA FOUNDATION: A strategic philanthropy foundation in India, Dasra connects donors with high-impact organisations and provides mentorship, strengthening India’s non-profit ecosystem.

CRY AMERICA: With its mission to ensure lasting change in the lives of underprivileged children, CRY America supports projects throughout India addressing nutrition, health, and education rights.

Collaborative potential

With their resources, influence, and deep understanding of challenges and opportunities, Indian-American philanthropists are creating collaborative bridges of social impact between the US and India. Beyond funding, they bring strategic direction, innovation, and expertise to create meaningful and sustainable change.

Their generosity serves as a powerful inspiration for aspiring philanthropists within the community, nurturing a culture of giving and making a profound difference in the world. In the tapestry of philanthropy, Indian-Americans undoubtedly have a vibrant and influential presence.
