NEW DELHI: The President has appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice AM Khanwilkar as the Chairperson of the Lokpal.
Justice Lingappa Swamy (former Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and Karnataka HC judge), Justice Sanjay Yadav (former Allahabad HC CJ) and Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Chairperson of the Law Commission, are the judicial members. Former civil servants Sushil Chandra (ex-CEC), Pankaj Kumar and Ajay Tirkey have been appointed as nonjudicial members. .
The Lokpal has jurisdiction over Central Government to inquire into allegations of corruption against its public functionaries including the PM, Cabinet ministers, MPs, Group-A officials and for matters connecting them.
Justice Khanwilkar was a judge of the Supreme Court from May 13, 2016 to July 29, 2022. Before his elevation to the SC, he was the Chief Justice of the High Courts of Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh and a judge of the Bombay High Court.
