During his three-day trip to Japan, from March 7 to 9, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged in a series of high-level talks to strengthen the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between the two nations.

The highlight of the visit was his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, where Jaishankar updated Kishida on recent developments in the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

A significant aspect of the visit was the 16th IndiaJapan Strategic Dialogue held between Jaishankar and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa on March 7. This dialogue covered various aspects of the partnership, including politics, trade dynamics, investment prospects, infrastructural cooperation, technological synergies, defence engagements, security cooperation, and cultural exchanges.

Both leaders reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to adjusting the bilateral relationship to meet contemporary needs, fostering greater understanding between people of the two countries. Discussions included joint efforts in semiconductor ecosystems, sustainable technologies, defence cooperation, digital innovation, mobility frameworks, and the promotion of Japanese language proficiency in India. Regional Indo-Pacific imperatives and global dynamics were also discussed.

Jaishankar also met with prominent political figures such as Vice President of LDP, Taro Aso; Secretary-General of LDP, Toshimitsu Motegi; and Chairman of Japan India Association, Yoshihide Suga, reaffirming the commitment to enhancing bilateral synergies. As a gesture of goodwill, Jaishankar paid respects to Akie Abe to convey Prime Minister Modi’s condolences on the passing of Madam Yoko Abe, the revered matriarch of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Additionally, Jaishankar engaged with a diverse group of public figures and opinion leaders in Japan.

His participation in the inaugural Raisina Roundtable in Tokyo facilitated insightful discussions on IndiaJapan bilateral relations amid shifting global paradigms. His address at the Nikkei Forum on India-Japan partnership explored the historical trajectory and contemporary dynamics of the alliance while seeking innovative avenues for collaboration.
