NEW DELHI: Google will be manufacturing its flagship smartphone Pixel in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced on May 24. That is not all, the company is also likely to manufacture dronesthrough the unit, reports say.Alphabet Inc. intends to manufacture Pixel phones in Tamil Nadu, establishing fresh productionfacilities in collaboration with Foxconn Technology, a Taiwanese contract manufacturer.
Google reportedly may go beyond Pixel and drones to manufacture other products that it has to offer.
This follows a recent visit by a state delegation, including Industries Minister Rajaa and Foxconn executives, to the US where they met senior Google officials in Mountain View, California, the tech giant has shown interest in establishing a plant near Chennai.Currently, Foxconn and Pegatron handle over 80 per cent of the $14 billion worth of Apple’s iPhone assembly in the country in Tamil Nadu. Alongside Tata’s electronics operations and component ecosystem, Tamil Nadu leads India’s mobile phone manufacturing sector.
