Marking a major achievement for the nation’s aviation sector, the first three ultralight aircraft, Skyleader 600, manufactured in Tanzania have officially started operations.

Announcing this, David Grolig, Director of Airplanes Africa Limited (AAL), said, “We have successfully produced three Skyleader 600 aircraft in Tanzania, and they are now ready for the market. These planes offer an ideal transportation solution for Tanzania and the broader African continent, and we invite potential buyers to become proud owners.”

The first aircraft arrived at the Julius Nyerere International Airport recently.

Based in Morogoro, AAL received approval to begin operations after fulfilling rigorous international aviation standards. Grolig praised the high quality and modern design of the Skyleader 600, emphasising that these planes are now available for purchase.

The decision to set up an ultralight aircraft manufacturing facility in Tanzania was driven by the country’s supportive investment environment and the openness of Tanzanians to embrace innovative technologies.

The Skyleader 600, designed to seat two people, including the pilot, is well-suited for business travellers who require efficient long-distance travel.

“We conducted thorough research on the needs of business travellers who frequently cover long distances,” Grolig said and added, “This aircraft will enable them to attend meetings in different regions and return to the city quickly for other commitments.”

Major advancement

The launch of the Skyleader 600 represents a significant advancement in Tanzania’s aviation industry, offering a new, efficient option for domestic and regional air travel. As the first company in the country to manufacture such aircraft for commercial and personal purposes, the Airplanes Africa Limited employs both Tanzanian and Czech staff. They have also created job opportunities for young Tanzanians, with some employees selected for internships in the Czech.
