The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has extended its visa amnesty programme for two more months, giving overstayers another chance to regularise their status without penalties.

The amnesty, which began on September 1, was set to end on October 31. The UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security extended the grace period till December 31, giving chance to many seeking to stay legally. “This is the last opportunity for overstayers to settle their status without facing a ban,” stated Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, director of the federal authority, said.

He announced the extension as part of the UAE’s 53rd Union Day celebrations, reflecting the country’s commitment to humanitarian and cultural values. This extension followed requests from individuals wishing to either exit the country or secure employment to adjust their residency status. The decision comes as ICP service centres saw a surge in demand in the days leading up to the original deadline of October 31, 2024.

Al Khaili noted that the extension provides violators with a chance to resolve their situations, safeguard their rights, and protect their families. Over the past two months, many individuals have taken advantage of the amnesty period, supported by ICP and its Government and private sector partners working to overcome challenges faced by certain violator categories within legal bounds.

He warned that fines will be reinstated for those who remain in violation after the new deadline. The ICP, in collaboration with Government partners, plans to intensify inspections and take legal action against those still in breach following the grace period’s conclusion.

Indian expatriates

The Consulate General of India in Dubai has been actively assisting Indian expatriates with the process. As of now the Indian mission has issued a total of 2,275 Emergency Certificates since the scheme’s launch. Furthermore, 10,951 amnesty- seekers have visited the Consulate for assistance, with a total of 2,409 Exit Permits and Outpasses have been issued to facilitate smooth departures.

Lieutenant Colonel Salem bin Ali, Director of the Customer Happiness Department at Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, has encouraged those unable to find jobs to exit the UAE, suggesting they could return later under a valid visa if they wish.
