NEW DELHI: In a significant step towards advancing child welfare and primary education, Rotary International, in collaboration with the ISKCON, has launched a large-scale nutrition initiative for underprivileged schoolchildren in the national capital.

Backed by Rotary New Delhi and supported through contributions from Rotary members, the programme will provide free, balanced meals to students from Classes 1 to 5. The meals will be prepared and distributed through a newly established, technology-driven centralised kitchen equipped with advanced automated systems to ensure efficiency, hygiene, and consistency.

The initiative seeks to address a persistent challenge in India’s education ecosystem—malnutrition—which continues to affect attendance, concentration, and overall academic performance among children. By ensuring access to at least one nutritious meal during the school day, the programme aims to create a stronger foundation for learning among children from economically weaker sections.

The project has been conceptualised under the leadership of Rotary’s Past President Pran Mehta, who underscored the critical link between nutrition and education. He noted that a well-nourished child is more attentive, healthier, and better positioned to perform academically, thereby reinforcing the long-term societal value of such interventions.

At the heart of the initiative is a modern food production facility capable of preparing thousands of meals daily using automated cooking processes. The centralised model ensures uniform quality, adherence to nutritional standards, and timely delivery across multiple schools, while also reducing wastage and improving operational efficiency.

The programme complements the Government of India’s PM POSHAN Scheme, which aims to provide nutritional support to schoolchildren nationwide. By reinforcing existing public efforts with institutional collaboration, the initiative strengthens last-mile delivery and enhances the overall impact of school meal programmes.

The collaboration brings together Rotary’s long-standing commitment to community service and ISKCON’s extensive experience in large-scale food distribution through its “Food for Life” initiative. This partnership reflects a powerful synergy of service and spiritual values, demonstrating how collective action can drive meaningful social change.

The impact of the initiative is expected to extend well beyond addressing immediate hunger. Regular access to nutritious meals is likely to improve school attendance and retention, enhance students’ ability to focus in classrooms, and contribute to better academic performance. Over time, improved nutrition will support healthier growth patterns among children while easing the economic burden on low-income families. Together, these outcomes are expected to contribute to the holistic development of children and strengthen the broader social fabric.

The initiative is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those relating to Zero Hunger and Quality Education, highlighting the importance of integrated and collaborative approaches to development.

As India moves steadily towards its long-term development vision, initiatives that integrate nutrition, education, and community participation are becoming increasingly vital. The Rotary–ISKCON collaboration stands out as a scalable and impactful model—demonstrating how technology, institutional commitment, and shared values can come together to create lasting change at the grassroots level.
