A Fourth Session Lower — and Infosys Reports This Evening

NEW DELHI: India’s markets closed lower for a fourth straight session on Thursday, though the retreat stayed orderly rather than anxious. The Sensex ended at 76,391.39, down about 364 points (0.47%), and the Nifty 50 at 23,870, off roughly 127 points (0.53%), with small- and mid-caps softer by about 1%. Firmer crude oil — pushing toward a six-week high on West Asia tension — and this week’s tariff headlines kept sentiment in check, with pharmaceutical names among the softer spots after the US signalled a future tariff on generics.

The session’s real event lands after the bell. Infosys, the IT bellwether, reports its June-quarter (Q1 FY27) results this evening, and the sentence investors will hunt for is the company’s full-year growth guidance — currently pitched at 1.5% to 3.5% in constant-currency terms, with some analysts expecting the top end trimmed. For scale, the same quarter a year ago brought net profit of about ₹6,921 crore on revenue near ₹42,279 crore; the Street is looking for revenue near ₹47,800–48,800 crore this time, but it is the guidance and large-deal wins, not the headline print, that will set the sector’s mood.

Waiting on the guidance: The Sensex ended near 76,391 and the Nifty at 23,870 on Thursday — a fourth straight session lower as crude firmed — with Infosys’s Q1 FY27 results, and its all-important full-year outlook, due this evening.

A market that pauses before an earnings print and a trade deadline is not losing its nerve; it is doing its homework.

At a Glance

• Close: Sensex 76,391.39 (▼364, 0.47%), Nifty 23,870 (▼127, 0.53%) — a fourth session lower
• Drags: crude near a six-week high on West Asia tension; pharma on tariff news; small- & mid-caps ~1% lower
• This evening: Infosys reports Q1 FY27; guidance stands at 1.5–3.5%
• RBI (June): repo held at 5.25%; FY27 growth 6.6%, inflation 5.1%

For an ordinary saver reading the ticker, the useful frame is perspective. Index levels move every day; the deeper story of the Indian market this year has been resilience — a broad earnings base, an economy still growing among the fastest of the majors, and a deep pool of domestic investors whose steady monthly flows keep buying when foreign money turns cautious. A soft patch around an oil scare and a trade deadline is the kind of weather long-term investors have learned to sit through.

The constructive read is that the fundamentals remain sturdy even as the Reserve Bank, sensibly, keeps one eye on risk. Once this week’s crude scare and the July 24 tariff clock resolve, the way forward is for earnings and guidance — starting with tonight’s Infosys numbers — to set the market’s direction rather than the day’s headlines. Levels rise and fall; reading fundamentals over noise is what compounds over time.
