NEW DELHI: Human spaceflight is remembered for the launch and decided by the tests nobody photographs. ISRO has announced that it successfully completed three major qualification tests for the Gaganyaan crew module — among them the systems governing water recovery and module separation. Neither will feature on a commemorative stamp. Both are precisely the kind of milestone that determines whether a crewed mission is a triumph or a tragedy, because they cover the moments when a spacecraft must do exactly one thing correctly and has no second chance to do it.
The programme’s sequence is deliberately unhurried. The first uncrewed test flight, G1, is expected around late 2026 and will carry Vyommitra — a half-humanoid robot occupying the astronaut’s seat to exercise the life-support and safety systems under real flight conditions. Two further uncrewed flights, G2 and G3, follow. Only after those have been demonstrated will the first crewed mission fly, currently planned for 2027. If it succeeds, India becomes the fourth nation to launch its own citizens into orbit on its own vehicle, after the Soviet Union, the United States and China.

A robot will sit in the seat first, so that a human never has to find out the hard way. That is not caution. That is what respect for a life looks like in engineering.

The schedule has moved before, and it may move again — a point worth stating plainly rather than around. Human-rating a launch vehicle is the most demanding thing a space agency can attempt, because every subsystem must be requalified against a standard where failure is unacceptable rather than merely expensive. Delays in such a programme are not a sign of drift; they are usually a sign that someone found a problem in a test bay instead of in flight. The correct measure of Gaganyaan is not whether it launches on the first announced date, but whether each slipped date bought a genuine reduction in risk.
The wider return is already accruing. A human-rating programme forces improvements in materials, avionics, redundancy, life-support and quality assurance that flow outward into satellites, launch services and the private space firms now growing around ISRO. India’s space economy has become a serious industrial sector rather than a scientific curiosity, and the capabilities being qualified for Gaganyaan are the ones that will let it bid for work it currently cannot. The constructive way forward is to protect that patience: fund the test campaign fully, resist the temptation to announce dates before the hardware has earned them, and let the unglamorous milestones accumulate. They are the mission.
