One in Eight Vehicles Sold in July Was Electric

Electric three-wheelers

Blitz Bureau

NEW DELHI: India retailed 3,27,901 electric vehicles in July 2026, its highest monthly total on record and a rise of more than 66 per cent on the same month last year. Nearly one in every eight vehicles registered in the country that month ran on a battery.

The figures come from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, which counts vehicles actually registered rather than despatched to dealers — a distinction that matters, because retail data cannot be inflated by stock sitting in a showroom. Two segments carried the month. Electric two-wheelers crossed two lakh units in a single month for the first time, taking an 11.2 per cent share against 10.6 per cent in June and 7.7 per cent in July 2025. Electric three-wheelers took 65.1 per cent of their segment, up from 62.7 per cent a month earlier — a category where the electric vehicle is now simply the default choice.

The three-wheeler got there first: electric models took 65.1 per cent of three-wheeler registrations in July 2026, while electric two-wheelers crossed two lakh units in a month for the first time.

India is not electrifying the car first. It is electrifying the vehicle that a family actually owns, and the one that earns a living.

At a Glance

• Total EV retails, July 2026: 3,27,901 units, a record
• Growth: over 66 per cent year on year
• Overall penetration: close to one in eight vehicles sold
• Electric two-wheelers: above 2 lakh units, 11.2 per cent share (10.6 per cent in June; 7.7 per cent in July 2025)
• Electric three-wheelers: 65.1 per cent share (62.7 per cent in June; 60.3 per cent in July 2025)
• Electric passenger vehicles: 32,928 units, up 83.13 per cent from 17,981
• Electric commercial vehicles: 3.57 per cent share, from 1.65 per cent a year earlier
• Source of data: FADA vehicle registration figures

The passenger-car number is the one that has changed character. Electric passenger vehicle retails were 32,928 units in July, against 17,981 a year earlier — a rise of 83.13 per cent, off a base small enough that the percentage flatters it but large enough that it is no longer a rounding error. Commercial vehicles remain the laggard at 3.57 per cent, though even there the share has more than doubled in a year. The sequence tells you something about how transitions actually work in India: the shift begins where the daily running cost is felt most sharply, which is the scooter a household rides and the auto-rickshaw a driver leases, and only then moves to the car.

The constructive question is charging, and it is a genuinely hard one. A two-wheeler charges from a domestic socket; a fleet of electric autos in a dense city does not, and neither does a commercial vehicle on a highway run. Public charging density, distribution-transformer capacity in older neighbourhoods, and a battery-recycling chain that does not yet exist at scale are the three constraints that will decide whether this curve keeps its slope. India has done the demand-side work well. The next twelve months belong to the grid engineers.
