NEW DELHI: The Indian women’s cricket team clinched gold in the 2026 Asian Games in the most emphatic fashion crushing Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the ¿nal at Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. It was also India’s ¿rst gold medal of the Games and a victory that showcased the enormous gulf between the defending champions and the rest of Asia.
Led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, India produced an allround performance, piling up 216 for 3 before skittling Sri Lanka out for a mere 69 in 15.4 overs. The ¿nal turned into a masterclass in aggressive batting, disciplined bowling and electric fielding.
Setting the tone
India’s victory was built on a blazing start by the opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. The duo stitched together a 99-run opening partnership, attacking Sri Lanka’s bowling from the very ¿rst over and putting the ¿nal beyond doubt inside the Powerplay.
Mandhana played a sublime innings of 79, blending elegance with authority, while Shafali smashed 48 with her trademark fearless approach. Their partnership once again underlined why they remain one of the most destructive opening combinations in women’s T20 cricket.
The fireworks continued in the death overs as wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh blasted an unbeaten 49 off, just 22 balls, ensuring India crossed the 200-run mark with ease. Sri Lanka’s bowlers had no answer to India’s relentless assault.
Bowlers finish the job
If the batters dominated the first innings, India’s bowlers delivered an even more ruthless performance in the second. Sri Lanka never recovered after losing early wickets and were bundled out for 69.
Deepti Sharma, Shafali Verma and the Indian bowling attack shared the wickets as Sri Lanka’s batting crumbled under sustained pressure. The fielders backed the bowlers brilliantly, turning half-chances into wickets and never allowing the opposition to settle. Winning by 147 runs made it one of India’s most comprehensive victories in a major multisport tournament final.
Smriti creates history
The final was memorable for another reason. During her innings, Smriti Mandhana became the first woman cricketer to score 11,000 international runs, adding another remarkable milestone to an already glittering career.
The Sangli batter has now emerged as the undisputed batting icon of Indian women’s cricket, combining consistency with match-winning brilliance across formats. India had won the gold medal when women’s cricket debuted for the country at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games. By defeating Sri Lanka once again in the 2026 ¿nal, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side successfully defended the title and reinforced India’s status as Asia’s dominant force in women’s cricket.
The gold medal is signi¿cant beyond the Asian Games. With T20 cricket set to feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, India’s commanding performance sends a strong message to the cricketing world. The team displayed depth, powerhitting, quality spin and pace, and the con¿dence of a champion side capable of dominating continental rivals.
