The Week in Review
NEW DELHI, : The week opened with a door swinging open. Two days later Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland arrived with about 100 business leaders, and on 23 October External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was in Baku. Those openings are the Big Read below.

The Big Read: Four doors India opened abroad this week
Deepak Dwivedi
NEW DELHI,
A trade agreement came into force, a European prime minister brought his chief executives, a capital that sided with Pakistan last year reopened talks, and a small UN fund showed its reach. Each is modest alone. Together they describe a strategy.
On 20 October, India’s free trade agreement with New Zealand entered into force. From that day New Zealand charges no duty on any tariff line for Indian goods, removing tariffs that peaked at 10%, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in its press release of 19 October. The agreement opens about 118 services sectors to Indian firms, sets aside 5,000 temporary employment visas and 1,000 working-holiday visas a year, and commits New Zealand to facilitate US$20 billion of investment. The two sides aim for NZ$7 billion of trade by 2030. Dairy, sugar, edible oils and key farm commodities stay outside the concessions, the release says.
The same week brought three more openings. Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland was in India from 21 to 23 October with about 100 business leaders. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar was in Baku on 23 October. And on 22 October the India-UN Development Partnership Fund held its ninth annual event in New York.
Europe: a partner with a target
Poland is now on a timetable. The Joint Statement of 22 October commits both countries to doubling trade by 2030 and adds a Defence Industry Dialogue and a counter-terrorism dialogue; Poland also joined the India-led Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. On the Foreign Ministry’s own base of US$6,360 million in 2025, doubling means about US$12.7 billion. In Bengaluru on 23 October, Prime Minister Tusk asked Indian and Polish firms to build technologies together and sell them worldwide, the Polish Chancellery recorded. Both leaders want the India-European Union trade agreement signed and ratified early. Poland, an EU economy past US$1 trillion, gives India a friend inside that room.
Eurasia: a corridor, and a thaw
In Baku, Mr Jaishankar called on President Ilham Aliyev and met Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov. India and Azerbaijan, he said in his press remarks, will coordinate more closely on the International North-South Transport Corridor — “very important for us.” He thanked Baku for helping evacuate Indian nationals, mostly students, from Iran earlier this year. Azerbaijan stood with Pakistan during Operation Sindoor in May 2025; this year’s contacts — consultations in April, a summit visit in October and now the Foreign Minister — have rebuilt a working channel. Mr Bayramov has been invited to India and trade delegations will be exchanged.
The Global South: small sums, wide reach
The India-UN fund, set up in 2017, has backed 95 projects in 65 countries with more than US$76 million through 15 UN entities, the UN Office for South-South Cooperation’s Year-in-Review 2026 records. That is about US$0.8 million a project, by Blitz arithmetic. Envoys from the Pacific, Africa and the Caribbean spoke at the event about what the fund had done in their countries. The UN office calls the approach “demand-driven and non-conditional”.
At a glance
- India-New Zealand FTA in force from 20 October 2026: zero duty on every tariff line
- Visas a year for Indians under the FTA: 5,000 work, 1,000 working holiday
- India-Poland trade, 2025: US$6,360 million; goal: double by 2030
- India-UN fund: 95 projects, 65 countries, US$76 million+
How it compares
| Measure | Value | Share of goal |
|---|---|---|
| India-Poland trade goal, 2030 | About US$12.7 billion | 100% |
| India-Poland trade, 2025 | US$6.36 billion | 50% |
Reaching the goal needs about 14.9% growth a year.
What the numbers add up to
US$6,360 million × 2 = about US$12.7 billion. US$76 million ÷ 95 projects = about US$0.8 million a project.
What India gains
Duty-free access in the Pacific, a dated partner in the EU, a working Eurasian corridor channel and goodwill across the Global South.
Blitz appreciates
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s negotiators, who kept dairy, sugar and edible oils protected while winning zero-duty access.
Sources: Ministry of Commerce and Industry press release (19 October 2026), India-Poland Joint Statement (22 October 2026), MEA India-Poland brief (as on 30 June 2026), MEA press remarks in Baku (23 October 2026) and UNOSSC Year-in-Review 2026; checked on pib.gov.in, pmindia.gov.in, mea.gov.in and unsouthsouth.org.
Why It Matters
What India gains: the four openings run in four directions — the Pacific, Europe, Eurasia and the developing world — and none depends on another. That is the point. A trading nation that wants to grow at 7% needs many markets, many routes and many friends, and this week added to each. The work now passes to exporters, who can use New Zealand’s zero tariffs from day one, and to the officials who must turn Poland’s target and Baku’s corridor talk into contracts.
Blitz Views
The Department of Commerce could publish a monthly India-New Zealand trade tracker from November, so exporters and readers can see the agreement’s first effects in numbers both governments accept.
