NEW YORK: Congressman Tom Suozzi, a close friend of the IndianAmerican community, who earlier served the third Congressional district of New York for three terms, was re-elected in a special election last month.
“Suozzi won a tough election because he is generally very helpful to his constituents and well-liked” said Varinder Bhalla, former Commissioner of Nassau County and a friend of Suozzi for two decades.
Suozzi has a longstanding relationship with India and the Indian-American community. In 1999, he met the then-Prime Minister IK Gujral at a reception hosted by Bhalla. In 2018, as a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, he went to India and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Upon his return, Suozzi said, “Having met the Prime Minister, the Cabinet ministers, and the business leaders of India, I am more convinced than ever that the USIndia relationship is not only important for our two countries but the entire world.”
As the Mayor of Glen Cove in 1994, Suozzi helped the Sikh community establish the first gurdwara on the north shore of Long Island.
“In later years, as Nassau County Executive, Suozzi appointed the firstever Indian woman and the first-ever Sikhs as Deputy Commissioners in his administration”, said Bhalla, who himself was appointed a Commissioner.
