NEW DELHI: The National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) is collaborating with various Central ministries and departments to craft a strategic roadmap for national security.
The concept of a National Security Strategy has been under consideration in India for several years, with experts and policymakers recognising the need for a cohesive and well-defined strategic framework. India’s strategic landscape is continually evolving, with diverse challenges and threats, both conventional and non-conventional, necessitating a unified approach to safeguarding national interests.
The NSCS has taken the lead in coordinating the development of India’s National Security Strategy. Central to this process is extensive consultation with various Central ministries and departments, which play pivotal roles in addressing the nation’s security concerns. Collaboration with stakeholders from diverse sectors ensures a holistic and informed strategy that considers multifaceted security challenges.
Once the National Security Strategy is drafted, it will be presented for final approval to the Cabinet. This crucial step reflects the commitment to ensuring that the strategy receives the highest level of endorsement within the government, underscoring its importance in shaping India’s security posture.
The National Security Strategy will likely encompass a range of objectives and focus areas, including defending national sovereignty, countering terrorism, ensuring economic security, strategic partnerships, Cyber security, and disaster preparedness etc. Protecting territorial integrity and sovereignty remains a top priority in the strategy, addressing both external and internal threats.
Apart from it, developing a robust counter-terrorism framework to combat the menace of terrorism, which poses a significant challenge to India’s security is also very important. Addressing economic vulnerabilities and strengthening critical infrastructure against potential threats is also being considered. Nurturing strategic alliances and partnerships with like-minded nations to bolster India’s security has been highlighted.
Developing measures to safeguard against cyber threats and attacks, recognizing the growing importance of cybersecurity in the modern age and enhancing disaster preparedness and response mechanisms to mitigate the impact of natural and man-made disasters remains the main focal point.
