MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has presented a Rs 59,954.75 crore Budget for 2024- 25. The budgetary estimates this time are 10.5 per cent more than the 2023- 24 amount of Rs 54,256.07 crore.
The civic administration presented the Budget to Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, who was appointed as BMC Administrator by the state Government after the five-year term of corporators ended in March 2022.
BMC announced an annual education budget of Rs 3,497.82 crore for 2024-25. The Budget features a provision for giving Modern School Dictionaries (English-Marathi) to around 1,70,000 students of standard 5 to 10 BMC schools. For this, Rs 3.52 crore will be provided for primary schools and Rs 1.17 crore for secondary schools. A provision of Rs 928.65 crore has been made for Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST).
In 2023-24, revenue from property tax was estimated at Rs 6,000 crore which has been revised to Rs 4,500 crore, a fall of Rs 1,500 crore. For the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project, the civic body has allocated a fund of Rs 1,870 crore. Meanwhile, a total budget provision of Rs 1,160.95 crore has been proposed in the revised expenditure for 2023-24.
Chief Minister’s Deep Cleaning Programme has been undertaken from December 2023. BMC has developed a 61-point Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to guide this campaign. Chief Minister’s Zero Prescription Policy is going to be implemented in all BMC hospitals. It has been decided to include all necessary medicines on medicine schedule. Provision proposed for this is Rs 500 Crore.
Financial assistance for divyang above 18 years in BMC jurisdiction gets a provision of Rs 111.83 crore. BMC has decided to provide financial assistance for 1600 self-help groups at Rs1 lakh per group.
