New Delhi: Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has hailed the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on agriculture as “phenomenal,” highlighting its role in boosting farm productivity.

In a video shared on social media platform X, Nadella showcased how AI-powered solutions are transforming farming practices, particularly in Maharashtra’s Baramati region. He pointed to a small farm that has significantly increased its yield through AI-driven resource optimization.

“One example I wanted to highlight is a small farmer from the Baramati Co-op. By leveraging powerful AI technology, this landowner has improved their yield while reducing chemical use and optimizing water consumption. The results they achieved were phenomenal,” Nadella said in the video.

He also emphasized the potential of AI in processing geospatial data from drones and satellites, making advanced agricultural insights accessible in farmers’ native languages.

“One of the key capabilities of AI is sensor fusion, a concept we’ve discussed for decades. It integrates geospatial and temporal data from drones, satellites, and soil sensors in real-time. AI then processes this data and delivers meaningful insights to farmers in their vernacular language. Seeing this technology come together is truly remarkable,” he added.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk reacted to the video, commenting, “AI will improve everything.”

Microsoft has been actively involved in agricultural innovation in India. In 2022, the company launched an agritech project in Baramati in collaboration with the Agricultural Development Trust (ADT). The initiative integrates AI, satellite imagery, and other digital tools to help farmers achieve healthier and more sustainable harvests.

Meanwhile, Nadella also reflected on a key lesson from Microsoft’s history. He admitted that one of the company’s biggest missteps was underestimating the importance of search—a domain Google ultimately dominated.

“We missed what turned out to be the biggest business model on the web because we assumed the internet would remain decentralized,” he said. “We didn’t foresee that search would become the most valuable aspect of the web.”

Microsoft has since shifted its focus towards AI-driven advancements, including in agriculture, to stay at the forefront of technological innovation.
