Anil Maripelli Sathaiah will not pick his phone nor check his WhatsApp whenever riding the bike. The 22-year-old delivery boy from Hyderabad, who has been employed in Deliveroo, a food delivery service, has never received a single traffic fine. Anil, who came to Dubai eight years ago, was taught the cardinal principle of not attending to a phone while driving by his father from the childhood. He strictly adhered to this.
“My father Ramuvellu had told me not pick the phone whenever I was on work or while driving. At first, I was not convinced, but as time passed, I strictly followed his words.” said Anil.
His flawless record of never taking the phone bore results—as he was among the 100 delivery bike riders who received a pioneering award from Dubai Road Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police.
The Delivery Sector Excellence Awards were given away by Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA and Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police.
Anil received a cash reward of Dh 3,000. Anil, who came to Dubai to make a better living for himself and his family, says he clocks 14-18 food deliveries in a day, with the number going up slightly over the weekends. “I earn a commission on each order and by the end of the month, the accumulated amount is paid to me. Online tips also get added to the account,” he said.
He is also inspired to pass on the tip of not picking the phone to other citizens. “I also want to pass on this message and ensure that others also understand the advantages of not answering the phone while on duty or driving,” he added.
