NEW DELHI: Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov has expressed support for India’s pursuit of a permanent position on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This renewed endorsement marks a notable shift in the international perception of India’s influence.
Last month, in December, the Foreign Ministers of both nations held extensive discussions which have led to further strengthening of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
A permanent seat would afford India greater influence in shaping global policies and addressing crucial global issues. This backing from Russia marks a significant step toward realising India’s global aspirations and amplifying its international impact.
During a public talk on ‘International Turbulence: Challenges and Opportunities’ in the national Capital, the Ambassador affirmed Russia’s full support for India’s right to secure a permanent UN Security Council membership. He highlighted that this matter had been extensively discussed between the Foreign Ministers.
The envoy underscored the importance of India’s balanced and independent approach to global issues and its concurrent presidencies in the G20 and the SCO in 2023, presenting an opportunity to advance the agendas of these crucial associations.
The Russian Ambassador emphasised the dynamic nature of exchanges between heads of Security Councils and foreign ministers, with seven meetings occurring last year. He underscored the relevance of this dialogue in the current turbulent geopolitical scenario, asserting its continued significance.
The envoy noted the resumption of the work of the Intergovernmental Commission after the pandemic and highlighted the steadfast bilateral relations between Russia and India, characterised by intensive political dialogue in 2023.
