In a virtual farewell session on January 21, with a group of eminent Indian Americans, India’s outgoing Ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, underscored the paramount importance of the Indo-US relationship.
Addressing approximately 200 distinguished members of the diaspora, Sandhu emphasised their crucial role in fortifying this alliance and urged them to ensure that the second generation remains deeply connected to India.
During the session, Sandhu, who retires from the Indian Foreign Service after 35 years, stressed the need for the diaspora to encourage frequent travel to India among their children.
Assuring support in matters of security, he emphasised the unique position these individuals would hold in the future job market, particularly with international companies making a significant move into India. “You must ensure that your children remain invested in India; they travel to India. Like so many other communities here in the United States, you can ensure through your associations, through your groups because all of you can afford them going to India,” he said.
Sandhu, instrumental in establishing the Indian Consulate in Seattle – the sixth in the US, foresees the opening of two more consulates soon. His tenure involved extensive interactions with Governors and Mayors of various US states, recognising the role played by states and cities in fostering business ties.
Reflecting on his term, Sandhu acknowledged the critical role the Indian American community played, applauding their contributions to the progress made in the India-US relationship.
