The deep connection between India and Oman, with its roots going back millennia, is a testament to the enduring nature of the friendship. While the ties of people-to-people contact span almost 5000 years, the formal diplomatic relations were established in 1955. In 2008, this relationship was elevated to the status of a Strategic Partnership.
Oman holds a unique and indispensable place within India’s West Asia policy, serving as one of the most enduring regional partners. Over the years, the political interactions between the two nations have evolved.
Defence co-operation
Oman has emerged as India’s closest partner in the Gulf region. The defence co-operation has become the focus of the strategic partnership. Oman holds the distinction of being the first Gulf nation with which all three branches of India’s defence forces engage in joint exercises.
The economic and commercial ties between India and Oman have flourished over the years. India ranks prominently among Oman’s top trading partners. It has emerged as the second-largest market for Oman’s crude oil exports in 2022.
