NEW DELHI: Twelve greenfield airports have been operationalised as of now, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation Gen. (retd) V K Singh informed in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
In an effort to expand the airport facilities, including upgradation of infrastructures, the Central Government had accorded ‘inprinciple’ approval for setting up of 21 new greenfield airports.
The greenfield airports have a dual purpose: improving transportation links and making air travel more reachable. The primary aim is to shift air traffic from current urban airports to sites situated away from city hubs. This move is expected to lower pollution and ease environmental pressures, he said.
Greenfield airports are aviation establishments erected on previously unused or vacant plots. The term “greenfield” underscores their eco-conscious attributes, aiming to limit their impact on the environment throughout the building and operational phases.
AAI and other airport operators have initiated a Capital Expenditure (Capex) Plan exceeding Rs. 98,000 crore which is aimed at enhancing, renovating, and modernising existing brownfield airports, as well as constructing new greenfield airports. These efforts are geared towards addressing the increasing requirements and demands within the aviation sector, he added.
