NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police have registered a criminal case against the founder and editors of The Wire news portal for cheating, forgery, criminal defamation and conspiracy on the basis of a complaint filed by BJP IT head Amit Malviya.
The FIR was registered against the news portal for publishing “fake stories”, against Meta, Instagram and Malviya on the basis of fabricated documents.
The portal published new stories that alleged that Amit Malviya used his special privileges at tech giant Meta to take down over 700 social media posts.
Meanwhile, The Wire has filed a complaint against one of its former consultants, Devesh Kumar, who allegedly supplied the fabricated details for the published story, which was subsequently retracted. The journalists have been booked under sections 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery with the purpose of cheating), 469 (forgery for harming reputation), 471 (using forged document), 500 (defamation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
