NEW DELHI: In an attempt to boost tourism, the Kerala Government has embarked on establishing a oceanarium and a marine biological museum in Thirumullavaram which comes under Kollam district. This museum will help recreate Kerala’s history and its trade relations with the European powers and Middle East.

The State Government on November 26 approved Rs 10 crore to set up these two centres. “The main aim of this project is to boost tourism and celebrate the rich history of the southern district,” state Finance Minister KN Balagopal said.

Thirumullavaram coast, near Thangassery, will provide visitors with a unique experience to delve into the mesmerizing beauty of the ocean.

The projects will be operated by the State Coastal Development Corporation. The museum will serve as a fascinating exploration of Kollam’s historical significance as an ancient trading centre. This project will be one of the first ones to be developed by the state to recreate Kerala’s maritime trade relations.

“Kerala’s ancient trade relations with Chinese, Arab, Portuguese, Dutch, and British traders will be vividly depicted, offering a glimpse into the city’s vibrant commercial history,” Balagopal said. He said the allocated funds will cover initial activities, including the acquisition of land through a public-private partnership initiative. He expressed confidence that the venture would not only be a cultural and educational asset but also significantly boost Kollam’s tourism.
