NEW DELHI: Kerala has received an exceptional outlay of Rs 2,744 crores for several rail infrastructure and safety projects in the Interim Budget for the financial year 2024-25.

Railways has revealed that its efforts to straighten small curves in railway lines in Kerala are progressing well. It has devised a plan to increase the speed of trains from Thiruvananthapuram to Kayamkulam from 100 to 110 kmph and from Ernakulam to Kayamkulam via Alappuzha from 80 to 100 kmph. Trains will be able to travel faster on the route by the end of March once they acquire permission from the Railway Board.

Meanwhile, the speed of trains on the Ernakulam-Kottayam-Kayamkulam route will be increased from 90 to 100 kmph by the end of April. The speed of trains plying between Ernakulam and Shornur will be increased from 80 to 85 kmph by May this year.

At the same time the Railway has sought cooperation from the state government to increase the speed of trains to 130 km per hour. It is up to the state to acquire land to assist the railway in straightening rail tracks.
