MUMBAI: Late Lata Mangeshkar had many unfulfilled dreams when she left this world. One of them was to establish a university for music. Now that dream is about to be fulfilled.
Two years after the international music college in the name of the legendary singer was announced, it is set to become a reality.
The state Government has given administrative approval for the proposed world-class institution and construction work is to start soon. The state Directorate of Arts (DoA) has earmarked a 7,000 square meter plot at the Kalina campus of the University of Mumbai for the purpose.
“We have completed the initial process of finalising the design and selecting construction firm that will construct the international music college,” said a senior official from the higher and technical education department. “We are starting construction of the college complex and expect it to be ready in the next three years,” he added.
The complex envisions a global music hub with a 400-seat auditorium, classrooms, hostel and state-of-theart infrastructure. The international music college will offer diploma and degree courses.
The design and plan have been approved by the Mangeshkar family, and an advisory board is helping the government in setting up the college and courses.
Lata Mangeshkar was alive when the international music college was announced but soon was admitted at the Breach Candy Hospital on January 8, 2022. She passed away on February 6, 2022. As developing a new building took time, the state had started six certification courses at Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi, where the international music college was allotted a temporary space. The first batch of the international music college passed out recently.
