MUMBAI: Medical interns in Maharashtra have received a substantial 64 per cent hike in their stipend amount – from Rs 11,000 to Rs 18,000. The hefty increase will be effective from February.

The increase extends to students enrolled in aided medical, dental, Ayurveda, Unani, and Homeopathy colleges across the state, as per the state Government’s announcement after a Cabinet decision. “The move is expected to alleviate financial burdens on medical students and contribute to the overall enhancement of their educational experience,” said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde while approving the hike.

A representative from the Association of State Medical Interns, Maharashtra (ASMI) said that they have been rallying for an increase for several years now. Medical interns are those who work for a year in medical colleges after completion of MBBS.

“The Government has approved a significant increase in the stipend for medical interns in government medical colleges. It marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to enhance the well-being and support for medical interns,” the ASMI member said, expressing gratitude to the government.

The association said the increase in stipend was a recognition of the invaluable contributions made by medical interns and reflects the government’s commitment to prioritising their welfare. Even an individual who has completed his or her medical degree courses abroad will also benefit from this revision.
