A social enterprise in Versova village that works towards efficient waste management and social sustainability, has partnered with a recycling agency to empower women ragpickers.
Aadvikaa Clean Tech has collaborated with GemCorp Recycling to improve the lives of ragpickers through training, ensuring fair wages, and better living conditions. “The partnership aims to create a more inclusive and sustainable waste management ecosystem,” according to a press release.
“We believe that supporting women ragpickers isn’t just a social responsibility; it is an investment in building resilient communities and a sustainable future,” said Shoma Bhattacharya, Co-founder, Aadvikaa. “Through this collaboration, we are working to address the challenges faced by the women.
GemCorp’s outreach programme focuses on improving the women’s living and working conditions by providing monthly groceries, scholarships for children, training ragpickers and supporting infrastructure enhancement and employment opportunities.
“We recognise the importance of the work ragpickers do and we are committed to improving their well-being,” said Shankar Iyer, company secretary at GemCorp. “Our partnership allows us to amplify our impact and support more women reclaimers in waste.”
The effort earned praise from Ajay Kaul, Principal of Children’s Welfare Centre School in Versova. He said, “Initiatives like this bridge the gap between environmental responsibility and social inclusion, creating a more sustainable future for all. Investing in the well-being of ragpickers is crucial.”
