NEW DELHI: Maharashtra has taken the lead in the country in sale of cars, commanding 11.96 per cent of the total sales in the passenger vehicle segment, according to latest sales reports.
The state is closely followed by Uttar Pradesh, with a 10.04 per cent share, while Gujarat secured the third spot with an 8.46 per cent share of the market, it said.
The figures came from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), which released its Union territory / state-wise vehicle sales data for the third quarter (October to December) of the current financial year.
In commercial vehicle sales also Maharashtra took the lead over Uttar Pradesh with a share of 13.24 per cent. Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat followed closely behind, with the former garnering 9.84 per cent and the latter 8.69 per cent of the market share.
According to the SIAM report, however, Uttar Pradesh is at the pole position in total vehicle sales across various segments during this period, with Maharashtra a close second. In the two-wheeler category, Uttar Pradesh dominated the market with a 14.35 per cent share while Maharashtra followed at 10.98 per cent. Madhya Pradesh was in the third place with a 7.14 per cent share in this segment this quarter.
Uttar Pradesh stole the march over Maharashtra in the three-wheeler sales also in the country. While Maharashtra cornered 10.95 per cent of the three-wheeler market, Uttar Pradesh stood out with a 12.75 per cent share of country-wide sales.
It was a close battle for the second spot in the three-wheeler market this quarter, where Gujarat narrowly missed out with a 10.55 per cent share.
The total production of passenger and commercial vehicles, threewheelers, two- and three-wheelers in October-December 2023 was 71,32,689 units, the SIAM release said.
