COCHIN: With a massive roadshow and a mega rally of women, Prime Minister Narendra Modi kickstarted the Lok Sabha campaign of the BJP in the south Indian state of Kerala this week.
PM Modi’s roadshow in Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala, saw people from all walks of life participating with enthusiasm, massive crowds lining the roads.
Apart from state BJP leadership, alliance partners of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) were also present on the occasion.
The politics of Kerala, which swings between the CPM- led Left Democratic Alliance and the Congress -led United Progressive Alliance, is slated to see some interesting turn of events this time with the BJP- led NDA pushing its base across the minority community in the state. On day 2 of his visit to South India, the massive meet of women in Thrissur is being seen as part of the BJP strategy to break open its way in the Congress-CPM monopolised politics of Kerala.
The women’s meet, attended by over 2 lakh women, was also a grand reception for the Prime Minister after the passage of the women’s reservation Bill in Parliament in September. The participants included teachers, anganwadi workers, and women from all other walks of life. This is PM Modi’s second visit to the city in the last five years.
Many families, including an important office- bearer of a traditional church in Kerala, have joined the BJP recently after Christmas signalling major inroads for the central ruling party in the state with a considerable minority population.
