UGC chief on NEP 2020

NEW DELHI: Prof. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, UGC Chairman, called for swift implementation of NEP 2020 and called upon ViceChancellors (VCs) to take responsibility and motivate faculty members and students so that Higher Education system was transformed as was envisioned by NEP policy makers.

He was speaking at the two-day Northern Zone Vice- Chancellors’ Conference on Implementation of NEP 2020, which was organised by Panjab University, Chandigarh, in collaboration with University Grants Commission (UGC) and Central University, Haryana. Vice-chancellors, academicians, and policymakers from across the northern region attended the conference.

Speaking about the importance of NEP, he highlighted that the higher education system is passing through difficult times and NEP 2020 is like a light at the end of the tunnel.

Kumar said that 5000 skill hubs will be set up across the country so that dropouts become employable. He highlighted the importance of e-content in regional languages and said that digital empowerment through online learning was one of the important agendas. He also emphasised on creating more material in the regional languages and more digital content for the benefit of students.

The opening day proceedings began with Prof Renu Vig, Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, informing that the university was taking all the necessary measures to implement NEP 2020 from the next session.

Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar, ViceChancellor of Central University of Haryana, outlined the objectives of the workshop.

UGC Joint Secretary Dr Avichal Kapur applauded the efforts of Panjab University in hosting the conference.

The inaugural address was delivered by Bandaru Dattatraya, Governor of Haryana, who gave a comprehensive perspective on the significance of NEP 2020 in the broader educational landscape. He called upon all the stakeholders and intellectuals to come together to implement the NEP 2020 in its spirit.

The second day of the conference began with the conduct of 10 breakout thematic sessions covering holistically all the dimensions related to issues of implementation and challenges for NEP 2020.

A short film showcasing UGC initiatives related to the NEP was also presented during the event.
