NEW DELHI: The Congress ended the nearly 10-year-old rule of the K Chandrasekhar Raoled Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) Government by winning 64 assembly seats out of 119 in Telangana. KCR submits his resignation to the Governor after his party’s drubbing in the polls.
Telangana Congress chief Anumula Revanth Reddy was choosen as next Chief Minister of the state. The Congress was caught in a leadership tussle as there were two other contenders for the top post: N Uttam Kumar Reddy, a six-time MLA and former state unit president, and Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka. But finally the party decided in favour of Revanth Reddy.
The BRS, which has 101 members in the outgoing Assembly, got 39 seats, while the BJP secured eight seats. The AIMIM won seven seats and CPI one. The BJP’s vote share increased from 7 per cent in 2018 to 13.88 per cent in the present assembly polls.
Revanth Reddy’s style of functioning as Telangana Congress chief earned him several detractors within the party ranks, but he marshalled his troops well enough to dethrone the BRS. The party fielded him against Chief Minister, an indication of his rising stature within the state.
