NEW DELHI: In September, India witnessed an unprecedented surge in car sales, attributed to the festive season’s robust consumer demand and the launch of new SUVs, including the Honda Elevate, Citroen C3 Aircross, and the facelifted Tata Nexon, among others. According to industry experts, about 3,63,733 vehicles were dispatched in September, marking the highest monthly sales ever in the domestic passenger vehicle (PV) sector. This figure surpassed the 3,60,700 units dispatched in August. Compared to September 2022, there was a 2.4% growth from the 3,55,353 units sold then.
From July to September 2023, car sales peaked at 10,76,000 units, setting another record. During the first half of this fiscal year, automakers reported sales of 20,72,957 units, surpassing the two million milestone for the first time in this span. Additionally, from January to September, the PV industry experienced a first-time breakthrough, with sales exceeding three million.
For Maruti Suzuki, India’s leading car manufacturer, sales grew by 2.8% in September to 1,81,343 units, largely fuelled by increased SUV sales. The monthly sales comprise 1,53,106 units sold domestically, 5,726 units sold to other OEMs, and export sales of 22,511 units.
