ICICI SECURITIES: CENTER OF EXCELLENCE ON SLUDGE MANAGEMENT / CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Visualising a city’s organic waste as a flow of beneficial nutrients is a prerequisite to creating a circular economy for food in cities. In doing so, organic waste can be viewed not as a costly hazard, but as something that can benefit the economy, the quality of urban life, and the wider environment. A Centre of Excellence (CoE) is a vital component of any organisation wishing to achieve a digital transformation in its business. To create operational initiatives aimed at increasing productivity, reducing costs and brining more sustainable technologies into practice.
The objective of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Managing Organic Waste and Sludge is to transform organic waste from a burden into a valuable resource, thereby supporting a circular economy in urban settings. This initiative emphasizes the integration of innovative technologies, such as Co-digestion Anaerobic Digestion (CoAD), to manage organic waste and sewage sludge more sustainably. By viewing waste as a flow of beneficial nutrients rather than a costly disposal issue, the CoE aims to enhance productivity, reduce operational costs, and promote sustainable practices.
Such collaborations are crucial as they harness the combined expertise of ICICI Securities and TERI to address pressing national challenges, including environmental degradation and resource inefficiency. This partnership exemplifies how targeted technological solutions and strategic support can drive broader systemic changes and set a precedent for sustainable urban waste management.
• Co-digestion Anaerobic Digestion (CoAD) technology for OFMSW and STP sludge.
• Demonstration of technology in 2 tons per day capacity plant at Udaipur Municipal Corporation proves its ability to up-scale and commercialization.
• Total 4800 residents who were surveyed in a radius of 1 km are direct beneficiaries of the projects, this number might be more than this as pollution is un- controllable in any boundary.
• Livelihood creation for five families (~20 members).
• Cleaner environment; by treating ~260 tons of OFMSW and STP sludge; Greenhouse gas reduction (142 Carbon Credits) etc. leading to healthy life.
Key Strength & Achievements:
Development of a technological solution for organic waste and STP sludge management.
With the help of waste collected they can generate 40 m3 of biogas which is equivalent to ~100 units of electricity every day.
Hassel free operation of plant for one year without any financial implication on Udaipur Municipal Corporation (UMC), proving the Technology Readiness Level (TRl) for scale-up/ commercialization.
Demonstration of technology in 2 tons per day capacity plant at Udaipur Municipal Corporation proves its ability to up-scale and commercialization.
Process parameters optimized for co-digestion of OFMSW and STP sludge. Maximum limit for mixing of STP sludge is finalized at 23-25% to the OFMSW.
Observed net increment in biogas yield by 20 % from co-digestion.
Suitable solution for replication in other cities and/or local governments
Business opportunities for entrepreneurs, municipalities, start-up organizations etc
Ideal model for academic and research institutes.
