IN a recently released podcast on March 14, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar outlined the “clear” foreign policy decisions taken by the Narendra Modi government, which have proven crucial in safeguarding India’s interests amidst global challenges such as the Ukraine conflict.
During an interview with influencer Raj Shamani, who boasts over two million YouTube subscribers, Jaishankar elaborated on India’s rationale behind its resolute stance, including the purchase of Russian crude oil. “We could have opted for clandestine dealings with Russian oil, but such actions would not have been sustainable,” Jaishankar said.
India’s enduring partnership with Russia, particularly in defence, has been a cornerstone of its foreign policy. Although historically, Russia played a minor role in fuel exports to India, Delhi escalated shipments following the onset of the Ukraine crisis in February 2022. While asserting its prerogative to make decisions based on national interests, including on oil imports, India consistently advocated for a “complete cessation of all hostilities” in the region.
Highlighting India’s status as a major global player, Jaishankar emphasised the necessity for clarity in decisionmaking, particularly regarding vital matters like energy security. “You cannot rise without being clear,” he stressed, underscoring India’s economic prowess and burgeoning potential.
Jaishankar elucidated India’s diplomatic approach during interactions with foreign counterparts, emphasising the adverse impact of sanctions on Russian oil exports and India’s role in stabilising the global energy market. He asserted that India’s decision to purchase Russian crude oil had a stabilising effect on the global market, a favour to other nations.
Addressing queries about India’s firm stance on the Ukraine conflict, Jaishankar underscored the collective sentiment within the country, shaped by the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He clarified that his expressions mirrored the prevailing national mood rather than personal views, emphasising India’s steadfast commitment to its principles.
