Riayat - empowering

Charvi JainIn India, individuals with physical disabilities are often ostracised from the society and their hardships are overlooked. Not only do they encounter physical barriers pertaining to infrastructure, education, and employment, but also mental-health issues, and a lack of proper healthcare.

A staggering 30 million people confront the formidable challenge of physical disabilities. Among them, 44.7% face locomotor disabilities, which not only hinder movement but also impact selfexpression, independence, and self-esteem, leading to severe mental-health conditions. Such individuals encounter various challenges in dressing, which hinder their mobility, motion, and dexterity. From the frustration of removing prosthetic limbsto the struggle of wheelchair usersin donning lower garments, these obstacles deeply affect their life and livelihood.

Riayat - empowering

Enactus DCAC, an international not-for-profit student organisation based in Delhi, has conceived Project Riayat to address this concern. Riayat endeavours to empower specially abled individuals by providing affordable adaptive clothing solutions, creating employment opportunities and reducing the reliance on caregiversfor an enriched daily living experience. Simultaneously, it tacklesthe issue of surplus textile waste through a self-sustaining social enterprise.

With the mentorship of Dr. S Varuni from AIIMS Jodhpur, Riayat crafted adaptive clothing solutions for their beneficiaries. These clothing are specially designed for individuals with physical limitations, aiming to simplify dressing and undressing while countering social stigmas and stereotypes. Designed innovatively to resemble normal clothing from the outside, they feature hidden Velcro or magnetic closures, easy-to-use zippers, tear-away sleeves, and front or side openings, ensuring smooth dressing experiences with utmost comfort and convenience.

Upon conducting extensive research into adaptive clothing solutions, the team came across the pressing issue of textile waste, expanding our concern beyond the realm of innovative designsto significant environmental implications. Most of this “deadstock waste” is simply thrown away, eventually making its way into landfills creating carbon emissions. Annually, 360,000 tons of surplus textile waste results in 194.4 billion litres of water wastage. Recognizing the adverse effects on our environment, it was found crucial to incorporate sustainable practices by repurposing this waste into productive clothing solutions.

In addition to these initiatives, Riayat actively organises sensitization camps to raise awareness and educate participants about the issues faced by persons with disabilities, fostering understanding and empathy within communities. The Riayat portal offers mental health counselling sessions, an online community for individuals with special needs, promoting a positive body image and improving psychological and emotional well-being. Moreover it facilitatesthe online sale of products crafted by specially-abled artisans in collaboration with NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences). Furthermore, with a five-step business model from community identification to setting up production units, market linkages, and imparting skill training and entrepreneur creation, it works towards the goal of a sustainable social enterprise, transforming these individualsinto independent taxpayers rather than dole recipients. Offering a unique selling point, the adaptive clothing is affordable and customised with the aim to enhance the accessibility of traditional Indian wear for individuals with disabilities, fostering inclusivity and broader participation in cultural and social gatherings. Project Riayat also seeks to address the challenge of constraints in retail channels and limited variety, by the establishing special market linkagesreducing the economic infeasibility and inaccessibility of adaptive clothing in India. This distinguishes Riayat from other competitors and establishes it as a market-leader.

Recognized as a semi-finalist at the EnactusIndia National Exposition 2023 and securing the runners up spot at the JMI Pitch Hit competition, Project Riayat has garnered attention forits transformative approach. As it looks ahead, the project is poised to expand its reach and make an even greater impact on communities acrossIndia.

With a steadfast commitment to making life better for everyone, Project Riayat exemplifies the power of empathy, innovation, and inclusivity in creating a more equitable society. As it continues its journey, the project remains a shining example of positive change in action.
