Together We Rise: A Conversation with Nisha Paul

(Nisha Paul with Cherie Blair, wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair)

Jatin Chandna

Nisha Paul is a woman of many roles—housewife, writer, freelance journalist, and a pillar of support in her husband’s business. As the daughter-in-law of world-renowned industrialist Lord Swraj Paul, she embodies the essence of women’s empowerment. She believes that when women are educated and empowered, they not only realize their own dreams but also inspire others to become strong and self-reliant.

In an insightful conversation, she shares her thoughts on writing, women’s rights, and her deep love for nature and social service.

The Many Facets of Nisha Paul
Q: You balance multiple roles—housewife, writer, journalist, and businesswoman. Which one do you cherish the most?
A: Life is a continuous journey of learning. While I wear many hats, my priority will always be my family. Being a mother and wife is paramount to me, but every role I play adds to my growth.

Q: How did your passion for writing and journalism begin?
A: As a child, I loved movies—both Bollywood and Hollywood. Writing became my way of expressing imagination. I started with school magazines and poetry, and later, after marriage, I studied journalism at the London School of Journalism.

Q: What qualities make a great writer?
A: Deep observation, a passion for your subject, and honesty in your storytelling. A writer must see the world with an open heart.

A Love for Nature & Travel
Q: What does nature mean to you?
A: Nature teaches us patience and resilience. Trees, for instance, stand tall through storms while providing shelter to others. They symbolize faith and perseverance—values I hold dear.

Q: Your favorite place in India?
A: Mumbai. Childhood memories make places special, and for me, Mumbai holds that charm. I also love cities by the sea—the waves, the sound, and the vastness of the ocean always amaze me.

Empowering Through Social Work
Q: How involved are you in social service?
A: Helping children is close to my heart. I served as a trustee for Magic Bus UK for nine years. It’s an extension of Magic Bus India, which transforms the lives of underprivileged children by guiding them from childhood to livelihood.

I also admire Cherie Blair, who, through her foundation, helps underprivileged women achieve self-employment. Our Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi ji, spoke to me about his incredible initiative, Lakhpati Didi, which empowers women in villages to achieve financial independence.

Perspectives on Women Empowerment
Q: Your thoughts on women’s rights?
A: Every human deserves equality. It’s encouraging to see more opportunities for women in India, but there’s still work to be done. True progress happens when women are given the freedom to shape their own lives.

Q: How do you compare the status of women in Britain and India?
A: Every country has its own culture, shaped by its history and beliefs. India, with its rich heritage, has always worshipped both gods and goddesses. We must continue to honor that balance by ensuring equal opportunities for women.

Reflections on Life & Love
Q: You are a successful woman today. What does the future hold for you?
A: I am grateful for everything—both what I have and what I don’t. Life is a journey where we arrive with clenched fists and leave with open hands. In the end, we are all the same.

Q: Tell us about your life partner, Akash Paul.
A: I met Akash in 1981 at a wedding in Calcutta. He was determined to know me, and two years later, we got married. He is my life, but I have my own identity, and he understands that. His honesty is reflected in his actions, and his sense of humor is my rainbow.

Final Thoughts
Nisha Paul’s journey is a testament to strength, love, and purpose. As a writer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, she continues to inspire women to embrace every role with confidence and dignity. Her words echo a powerful truth—”Together we rise.”
