Toby UsnikThe year is 1970. The world is amid a technological revolution. New companies are being founded every day, and venture capitalists are rushing to invest in them.

One of these companies is a small startup called Apple Computer. The company is founded by two college dropouts, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. They have a vision to create a personal computer that is easy to use and affordable.

Venture capitalists are skeptical at first. They don’t see how a personal computer could be successful. But Jobs and Wozniak are persistent. They convince venture capitalists to invest in their company, and Apple Computer is born.

Apple Computer is just one example of the success stories that have come out of the venture capital industry. Over the years, venture capitalists have invested in some of the most successful companies in the world, including Google, Facebook, and Amazon.

How Venture Capital Works

We sat down last month with venture capitalist Jon Dishotsky of Great Venturesto learn more about the VC world as it relates to sustainability.

Venture capital is a form of private equity financing that is provided to startups and early-stage companies. Venture capitalists typically invest in companies that have the potential to grow rapidly. They do this by providing the company with capital and advice.

The venture capital process typically starts with a pitch meeting. The startup founders pitch their company to a venture capitalist, who will then decide whether to invest. If the venture capitalist decides to invest, they will typically negotiate a term sheet. The term sheet outlines the terms of the investment, such as the amount of capital that will be invested, the valuation of the company, and the rights of the venture capitalists.

Once the term sheet is agreed upon, the venture capitalists will invest the capital in the company. They will then work with the company to help it grow and develop its business.

The Risks of Venture Capital

Venture capital is a risky investment. Most startups fail, and venture capitalists often lose their investment. However, the potential rewards are also high. If a startup is successful, the venture capitalists can make a significant return on their investment.

The venture capital industry is constantly evolving. New trends are emerging, and the industry is becoming more globalized.

One of the most important trends in venture capital is the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). AI is being used in a wide variety of industries, and venture capitalists are investing in startups that are developing new AI technologies.

Another important trend is the growth of the global startup ecosystem. Startups are being founded all over the world, and venture capitalists are investing in startups in new and emerging markets.

Another trend Dishotsky leads in is venture capital for good – ESG type causes.
