NEW DELHI: India has registered its protest on the European Parliament’s move to bring a resolution on the Manipur issue, according to reports.

A statement from the office of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on October 14 said that every nation and Parliament is sovereign and their internal issues should not be discussed by others, the reports said.

Speaker Birla underlined India’s sovereignty and protested against bringing a proposal in the European Parliament on India’s internal issues, the statement mentioned.

On P20 sidelines

The Speaker reportedly brought up the issue during a bilateral meeting with European Union Vice-President Nicola Beer on the sidelines of the G20 Parliamentary Speakers Summit (P20).

The Lok Sabha Speaker also met several other presiding officers on the sidelines of the inauguration of Parliamentary Forum for ‘LiFE: Lifestyle for Environment’, ahead of the P20 Summit.

The dignitaries who exchanged pleasantries and exchanged thoughts with Birla included Milton Dick, Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad of Bangladesh, Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council, UAE, and Ashebir Woldegiorgis Gayo, Acting President, Pan Africa.
