ESSAR Group, a global conglomerate with significant operations in energy, infrastructure, and metals, has established a notable presence in East Africa, particularly through its involvement in the energy sector.

While Essar’s contributions to Tanzania’s economy may not yet match the scale of its operations in other African nations, its expertise in refining, distribution, and energy infrastructure development positions it as a key player in the region.

One of the group’s most visible investments in East Africa is its acquisition of a significant stake in the Mombasa Refinery, the only operational refinery in the region. This investment has implications for Tanzania due to the interconnected nature of regional energy infrastructure and distribution networks. By enhancing refining capacity in neighbouring Kenya, Essar contributes to the stability and efficiency of energy supplies that are vital to Tanzania.

Essar’s broader energy strategy aligns with Tanzania’s growing focus on natural gas as a key economic driver. Tanzania is rapidly developing its natural gas sector, aiming to bolster its energy infrastructure.
