NEW DELHI: ON the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the Embassy of India organised an event to celebrate the occasion at the Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Addis Ababa and witnessed a large turnout of people.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador of India Anurag Srivastava highlighted the significance of the occasion, this being the 150th birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. He spoke of the timelessness, universality and continued relevance of Mahatma Gandhi message in today’s world.
Tributes were paid to the leader by Samuel Zemenfeskidus, Health Bureau Vice Head of the Addis Ababa City Administration and by the senior management of the Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Members of the Indian community offered their floral tributes to Gandhiji on this occasion.
The Embassy of India has been organising various events and activities as part of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi.
The celebrations commenced last year on October 2 with the release of the album ‘Vaishnav Jan’ sung by popular local artiste. A Gandhi Heritage walk, tree plantation events, a talk series on what Gandhi means to people and an outreach to school students to create more awareness about Gandhi and his message were some of the events organised to mark these celebrations.
While the nation observes Gandhi Jayanti, the international community commemorates the International Day of Non-Violence, a United Nations observance proclaimed in 2007 with the support of more than 140 countries. This dual recognition captures both India’s deep reverence for the Father of the Nation and the global embrace of his timeless ideals.
