IN a world rife with divisions and escalating challenges, the G20 Summit held in New Delhi has emerged as a beacon of hope, marking a seminal moment in the annals of international diplomacy.

Under the stewardship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India not only showcased its ascending influence on the global stage but also demonstrated an unprecedented ability to foster unity among the world’s leading economies.

The unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration stands as a testament to India’s diplomatic acumen, setting a new benchmark for global cooperation, sustainable development, and inclusive growth.

Global South voice

Central to the summit’s success was India’s unwavering commitment to achieving a ‘100% consensus’ among G20 member states, a feat that underscored the nation’s diplomatic finesse. Amid the diverse and sometimes competing interests of the member countries, India’s role was pivotal in sculpting a unified vision for the future.

A significant highlight of the summit was its focus on amplifying the voice of the Global South, with India taking the lead in championing the causes of developing nations. The historic inclusion of the African Union as a G20 member, under India’s presidency, marked a critical step towards more equitable global representation.

By placing inclusive growth and sustainable development at the forefront of the agenda, India has signaled a shift towards a more balanced and fair global order, advocating for the needs and aspirations of the Global South

Sustainable development

The New Delhi Declaration outlined ambitious commitments towards sustainable development and climate action, reflecting the G20’s collective recognition of environmental sustainability as a cornerstone of global prosperity.

India’s push for reforms in Multilateral Development Banks to better mobilise climate finance exemplifies a strategic approach to combating climate change. Furthermore, the emphasis on developing inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities showcases a comprehensive strategy to urbanization challenges, integrating environmental sustainability with economic resilience.

Economic cooperation

The announcement of plans to establish rail and port links between the Middle East, South Asia, and Europe, in collaboration with international partners, highlights a forward-looking approach to global infrastructure development.

The initiative, seen as an alternative to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, reflects a commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable development, enhancing global economic cooperation, and creating resilient supply chains. The delicate handling of the Ukraine crisis and the emphasis on strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth illustrate India’s diplomatic prowess in managing complex geopolitical issues.

By securing a nuanced consensus on the declaration’s wording, India has reinforced the importance of multilateralism and collective action in addressing global challenges, showcasing its role as a mediator and consensus-builder on the world stage.

The road ahead

The G20 Summit in New Delhi has not only solidified India’s position as a global leader but has also charted a new course for international cooperation. The New Delhi Declaration, with its focus on inclusivity, sustainability, and multilateral cooperation, serves as a roadmap for addressing the myriad challenges facing the international community.

The summit’s outcomes underscore the potential for collaborative success, even amid divergent national interests, and highlight the critical role of global governance in navigating the path towards a more equitable and sustainable future.

The widespread acclaim from G20 members and the international community at large for the summit’s achievements reflects broad support for India’s vision of a more inclusive and resilient global order. As the world grapples with unprecedented challenges, the legacy of the New Delhi Summit offers hope for a future where international relations are governed by unity, cooperation, and a shared commitment to the common good.
